Rick is an instructor in Technical Rope Rescue with Rescue 3. He is also certified by Kentucky Division of Emergency Management to teach High Angle Rope Rescue and Search and Rescue courses for KyEM. He is a part time rock climbing instructor and guide and is certified as a Single Pitch Instructor by the American Mountain Guide Association.
Rick and his wife Liz own the 350-acre Muir Valley Climbing and Nature Preserve in the Red River Gorge area of Eastern Kentucky. This preserve is recognized as having the largest number of rock climbing visitors of any climbing venue in the Eastern U.S. Included among the high rock cliffs in the preserve are training areas for AMGA guide training, rope rescue training, and mountain rescue training.
Rick authored and illustrated the Course Manual for Rescue 3’s Technical Rope Rescue course, as well as other publications on the subject of technical rescue. He was the recipient of the 2010 “Best of Show” award presented by the International Technical Rope Rescue Symposium for his technical paper on “Strength of Tree Anchor Systems.”
